is this legal?

September 11th, 2007

On the weekend, James (who used to work for Newfound), took me along to see the first day of the Targa in Newfoundland. For those, like myself, who don’t know, the Targa is a series of timed races on regular streets and roads. They’re closed for the event (thankfully) and every car has to finish each leg within a certain amount of time. Too slow, and they lose, too fast, and they lose. It’s a neat concept.

Judging by the above picture, I’m sure that the person who invented the Targa is a relative of Darwin.

Because the roads were being closed down, we arrived early and spent some time walking around Flatrock, which has a very large and flat rock. Walking around on the rock, I came across another sign that, well, you just can’t avoid taking a picture of. If I find a third sign, I’m going to make a series of them while travelling around Newfoundland.

All in all, it was pretty fun. We managed to catch both legs of the Targa that day, saw some good cars, smelled some burnt rubber, and no one got hurt. The only annoyance was the security officials who put up two different colored tapes. The red area’s were offlimits while the yellow were safe for spectators. At both events James and I had found great spots behind the yellow tape, only to have an official come by, take down the yellow and put up red instead. Forcing us to move a few minutes before the race started.
However, that’s minor compared to James on Monday who, after finding a great position for the race, was informed that they changed the course and the race would no longer be going that route. In the end, he missed the whole thing.
I was safely at work, typing away.
