Prank!

February 1st, 2008

So we have this guy. A guy, at work. His name is John.

John is our IT Director at work and, as such, a rabid Windows PC User.

This week, he spent almost all of it out at the resort (with the exception of Friday). At some point, late Monday night I got an idea. This was, sadly, followed by a fit of laughing as most silly ideas are at 1 or so in the morning. If I was a better blogger, you’d have a clip of my giggling. Thankfully, I’m lazy and you don’t. Just imagine it somewhere between giggling and cackling.

The next day, I mentioned my idea to Jason, who works with John and, with a little refining, loved the idea. But I had hit my first snag, my new accomplice didn’t know John’s computer password either.

Wednesday, still nothing and no new ideas.

Thursday, Jena was back in the office, also loved the idea, but wasn’t any help for John’s password.

Friday we were certainly doomed. John was back in the office and there was no way I could sneak in long enough. I mean, it’s his office and his computer. What would I say if he walked in while I was sitting at his computer with nothing but a goofy grin to explain what I was doing.

So I shelved the idea and thought, well, I did what I could.

But we both know it didn’t end there or you wouldn’t be sucked into reading this much.

Just after lunch Jason walked by and told me, in no uncertain terms, that John was at a meeting and had just given Jason his password to check on something. It was like some cosmic alignment of planets had taken place. Everything fell together and I set to work.

Within a matter of moments, all of John’s web browers (Explorer, Firefox and Safari) opened with the proud Get A Mac page on Apple’s site.

John, upon finding the first one, told me that the “floodgates have been opened now” and that it was only a matter of time before he got me back. Not sure if he’s checked his other browsers yet. If not, it’s the prank that keeps on giving.

What a fun day.

  1. oh devo, converting pc users to mac is a long and hard road, but I should do that to George’s PC, it stares at me from the corner

  2. My son I am so proud of you!!! Keep up the good work for Mac, but do not touch my computer on your next visit. I am just learning how to operate the stupid thing

    Love Mom

  3. As I read down with great anticipation, I thought for sure you were going to reveal how you figured out putting Leopard on a PC!

Anyway, every little bit helps. We’re chipping away at him. I once said to John, “you live in a 72 dpi world, I live in a 300 dpi one. Of course I use a mac”. I think that sunk in.

One more thing and this is really important! Don’t convert too many people, it’s better being 3% market share, it really is.

  4. I love that, of all things, my Mom is proud of me pulling a prank on a co-worker.

  5. [...] now most of you know of the legacy of the original prank, to John actually ordering and receiving his new Mac. And it’s been great and I don’t [...]
