the hunt for red toaster

April 19th, 2008

I’ve been meaning to do more regular updates, but that has escaped me over the past little while. In fact, my last update featured lots of snow, all of which has pretty much disappear in a series of rainy and nice days.

Last weekend we had our usual after-work Friday drinks. This round was a bit special as a co-worker who had just returned from maternity leave was leaving us for another job. So it was a bit of a going-away, except that she’s still here. Which turned into even more of a reason to drink as we were all very happy she was staying. But I will say this, she is dangerous to drink with. Once I saw the Smirnoff Ice come out, I mentioned that they were dangerous. She responded with a whole-hearted “Yeah!” as only one can over a drink that’s guaranteed to get you drunker faster.

That night also featured my first (and hopefully last) Screech-In to make me a honourary Newfoundlander. Apparently I was a good sport. Also, the bartender and I had a good little exchange after I downed the shot of Screech:

Bar: You’ve done this before.
Me: Nope, I just like rum.
Bar: It’s good stuff. It’ll put hair on your chest.
Me: No thanks, I’ve got enough as it is.

Oh what fun. The next day was a house party with another co-worker. Thankfully a bought a six-pack of gatorade to get me through the weekend without any problems.

On Monday I received a nice care-package from my Dad at work:

It’s not that I can’t buy English Muffins here, or that there’s only some strange Newfoundland version made from cod tongues or something. Or that the ones here are all that different. But they’re different enough. And these are the brand that I grew up eating. So it made for some nice memories of home. I even have some left still.

But this has brought on a new challenge: finding a toaster that actually looks nice. Which, apparently, is next to impossible. I know, it’s just a toaster, but, well, I’d still like a toaster that toasts and looks good while toasting. Maybe a nice, stylish red one. Clearly I’m crazy.
Ironically enough, between my roommate and I we have four bottles of relish on the go, three food processors, but no toaster.
